The Complete Guide to IMEI-Level Inventory Tracking

Tracking inventory at the unit level — not the model level, not the SKU level, but the individual IMEI — is the single biggest operational upgrade a device reseller can make. Here's everything you need to know to do it right.

What is IMEI-level tracking?

Every mobile device has a unique 15-digit IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity). Tracking at the IMEI level means each unit in your inventory is a discrete record with its own data: condition grade, battery health, carrier lock status, functional test results, purchase cost, and sale history.

Compare this to SKU-level tracking, where you maintain a count of "iPhone 13 Pro, 256GB, Pacific Blue, Grade B" — useful, but it can't tell you which specific unit has a cracked frame, a 74% battery, or a prior repair history.

Grading standards that matter

Sour Sync Sync uses the following grading system, aligned with industry standards from Back Market, Swappa, and major wholesale buyers:

  • Grade A+ — Flawless. No visible wear. Battery health 90%+.
  • Grade A — Light use. Minor micro-scratches only, not visible at arm's length. Battery 85%+.
  • Grade B — Visible wear. Light scratches on screen or body. Battery 80%+.
  • Grade C — Heavy use. Scratches, scuffs, possible small crack. Fully functional. Battery 75%+.
  • Grade D — Cosmetically poor or functional defects. Priced for parts or repair.

Battery health thresholds and pricing

Battery health is the single most predictive variable for resale price variance within a grade tier. Our pricing data shows a consistent $12-18 premium per 5% battery health point for flagship iPhones, and $6-10 for mid-range Android.

Sour Sync Sync captures battery health at intake and automatically adjusts your pricing templates to reflect this. If you've been selling Grade A iPhones at a flat price regardless of battery health, you're leaving money on the table.

Carrier lock status

Always verify carrier lock at intake. A locked device sold as unlocked is a refund, a chargeback, and a lost customer. Sour Sync Sync integrates with IMEI check APIs to verify lock status on import, flagging any discrepancies before they reach your listings.

Unlocked units command a 15-25% premium over carrier-locked equivalents on most platforms. This is real margin — don't let it slip through because your intake process doesn't check.
